$3K raised by Veterans Appreciation Golf Tourney

By Greg Mason, PGA

What a wonderful day to be an American.  Our 1st Annual Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament at the Waverly Golf Course raised more than $3,000.  The money will be donated to the..

an Iowa based collaboration between the Iowa VA, Riverside Casino & Golf Resort and the Iowa Section of the PGA.

The GIVE Foundation is a not-for-profit organization to provide a structured golf program for injured Iowa Veterans who use the Iowa City VA Health Care System. The golf program is comprised of four phases of training for injured veterans to participate in to enhance injured veteran’s mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being; and improve their quality of life.

Em Albers wished to honor her brother Tyler, who serves in the Marines, by starting this tournament.  She enlisted the help of Bryon Howland to fundraise and organize.  They made a great team.  Thanks you two.

The day started with a moving Flag Raising ceremony and the singing of the National Anthem.

We were blessed to have Mark Burke, PGA and one of the GIVE instructors talk about this fun program prior to the shotgun start.  Mark Burke, PGA is our 2014 Iowa Section PGA Patriot Award Winner.  The GIVE is also blessed to have our Lead Instructor Jim Dickerson, PGA as the 2014 NATIONAL PGA Patriot Award Winner.

Then it was off to golf and the course was set up for scoring.  Throughout the day the contestants placed the American Flag on the flag poles on stakes provided to keep the colors off the ground.

They were all treated to Tyler Eckerman in full dress uniform, holding the flag on the 18th hole.  Thanks Tyler for your service and your help today.

Thanks to all the sponsors and players in this 1st annual event.  Next year will only get bigger and better.
