The G.I.V.E. Foundation (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) began in 2007 and was initiated by Mr. Lou King. Lou King’s legacy includes being a US Navy WWII Veteran, University of Iowa Hawkeye Quarterback, An Executive at Amana and the President of the PGA of America. Lou approached the Veterans Hospital about providing golf for Injured Veterans as part of their rehabilitation. Lou also approached Riverside Casino and Golf Resort owners, Dan and Bobby Kehl about supporting the effort of teaching and helping our Veterans to find a way to get them back into society through socializing and learning the game of golf. And with everyone’s support, the GIVE Foundation became a reality.
The Foundation receives recommendations from the VA Hospitals in Iowa City, Central Iowa and Sioux Falls South Dakota on Veterans who could benefit from golf as part of their rehabilitation.
The program has evolved and grown over the past 13 years to three locations. Blue Top Ridge in Riverside IA, Warrior Run in Norwalk, IA and The Falls Golf Course at the Grand Falls Casino and Resort in Larchwood, IA. All of our locations offer classes throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons.
Classes are five weeks long for two hours each week and taught by PGA professionals. Upon completion of the 5 week course, the Veteran receives a lifetime membership card allowing them to play golf with a guest / helper for free or for a nominal fee at over 30 golf courses across Iowa.
Many Veterans have said this has been life altering as they have adjusted to their injuries. The GIVE Foundation is proud to say that over 2,000 Veterans have been through the program.
Not only does the Foundation create opportunities for golf but we also purchase or provide donated equipment needed for the Veteran and their helper to play. Specialized equipment is also purchased to accommodate Veterans who have severe injuries so they also can enjoy the game of golf. Solo rider golf cars and specialized clubs are provided for the veterans with special needs.
To continue this program and expand it, we need your contributions of money or golf clubs. Look for the Donate button and help us help our Veterans. The cost per Veteran varies but as you know, golf can be expensive endeavor. Any amount of contribution will help. Thank you for your support.
